Ewwww. Fish scales. Plenty of Web sites back you up on this. Waiting on word from my friend Stacy Malkan, with safecosmetics.org and author of "Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry" for the final word...

Hello There,

I run an organic/natural web-based specialty boutique carrying safe and chemical free merchandise for babies and children. We are just outside of London in Dorchester but have no store front as of yet. We have kept our shipping rates really low and are now comparable to the high gas prices. We carry an excellent all natural sunscreen that EWG voted second out of 469 sunscreens tested last year. It is much cheaper than the number one rated sunscreen Soleo which rubs in easily and clear. I have used Badger sunscreen on my family for a couple of years now and decided to start carrying it to offer it other families in the area. All Terrain also make really good products. :)

Thanks so much!
Tracy

I love this article. It brought home to me how much we try to shape the lives of our pets for our own convenience instead of considering how the things we do affect them.
I have a friend who rescues homeless and distressed cats and provides a healthy home for them here in Guadalajara. Her name is Barbara Murray. Barbara currently has around a dozen cats. She uses layers of newspaper in a large rectangular pan for the convenience of her furry friends. She can lift off layers as they become soiled and add clean ones. I've been to her house several times and there is absolutely no odor for this litter box.
I am the publisher and principle writer of a newsletter for ex-patriots living in Mexico, many of whom are cat-lovers. I am writing to ask permission to use this blog as an article in the next publication.
Sincerely,
Vicki Wootton

I hear you! Every morning before taking our daughter to daycare we chase her down and douse her in sunscreen.

When I saw the Environmental Working Group's report I wanted to throw my hands up - you try to do the right thing, but figuring out what that is is often complicated.

I didn't recognize any of the brands they recommended, so thanks for flagging one that has worked for you, Leslie!

Hi Wendy,

According to the folks at All Terrain, Wild Birds Unlimited sell their products...except the one in London. And according to the folks at Wild Birds Unlimited, each store often carries different products. So...that leaves you either ordering it online (www.allterrainco.com) or, if you happen to be zipping past Kitchener or Cambridge, a store called Fiddlehead's carries it.
It's definitely worth picking some up. Their waterproof version truly is waterproof!

Thankfully, my veterinarian has advised those of us with older pets to skip vaccinations on both cats & dogs. Her point is that there's only so much immunity that can be built up anyway. Makes sense to me. She also encourages the 2-year rabies vaccination, which is helpful for our pets and our wallet(s).

[...] As owner of a new puppy, along with two new rescue cats…and someone whose elderly dog developed problems following a rabies vaccine, it’s certainly top of mind these days. You can read my original post here. [...]
